KEY NOTES

  • The questions asked were quite long, see ADDITIONAL NOTES section below, so we shortened the description in the image above to make it readable.
  • We did not share 1 of the 5 questions as we felt it was poorly designed/asked. See ADDITIONAL NOTES section below.

KEY INSIGHTS
Based on this poll:

  • 7:1 Kiwis believe that gender choice and transition techniques should not be taught in primary school.
  • 5:1 Kiwis believe that transgender girls should not be allowed to play in female sports (and vice versa).
  • 4:1 Kiwis believe that teachers should not lose their teaching licence for misgendering a student.
  • 2:1 Kiwis believe that we should ban puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and sex-change surgeries for children <18.

KEY QUESTIONS

  1. Do you agree with the majority of Kiwis on the issues above? If not, please feel free to provide your (honest, respectful, and intellectual) arguments to challenge their thinking.
  2. Should the wishes of the majority always rule in a democracy? If not, what are the exceptions and how do we draw that line?
  3. In general, how do we achieve greater social unity in New Zealand, with more peaceful protests and progressive debates?

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • We have displayed the questions and answers in the same order they were presented in the findings.
  • The full questions asked were:
    • “Do you believe that primary age children should be taught that they can choose their “gender” and that it can be changed through hormone treatment and surgery if they want it to be?”
    • “Some people have proposed banning puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and physical sex-change surgeries for children under the age of 18 who identify as transgender. Would you support or oppose this kind of ban?”
    • “Should boys who identify as girls be allowed automatic right of access to girls sportsteams such as netball or girls rugby or football (and vice versa)?”
    • “Should a teacher lose their teaching licence for misgendering a trans student (refusing to use their preferred pronoun or recognise their gender identity)”
  • We did not share the following 5th question below because we believe the wording was poor and corrupted the results. “Prohibits” is difficult language for the layman, and it’s also been asked in a difficult way, e.g. do you support a prohibition, and then a long explanation about school curriculum, which many will oppose even if they support a prohibition, hence creating confusion around what box to select. It also infers a general ban on “any sexual issues” but then uses very specific wording around “such as gender identity or sexual orientation”.
    • “Would you support or oppose a law that prohibits primary schools from teaching any sexual issues, such as gender identity or sexual orientation, in the classroom as part of the curriculum in primary schools – that’s ages 5 up to 10 or 11.”
  • We used typical traffic light colours of green = yes/support and red = no/oppose, with grey = unsure.
