NOTES:
- The data is from New Zealand censuses held in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2013, and 2018.
- Census data tables before 1996 are not available via Stats NZ’s public digital databases so have not been included in this analysis. However, you can access the yearbooks via https://www.stats.govt.nz/indicators-and-snapshots/digitised-collections/yearbook-collection-18932012/ if you wish to do further analysis.
- 1991 census data was used as a comparison in the 1996 census data results, so was included as well.
- ‘Māori religions/beliefs/philosophies’ are split out from Christian religions in Stats NZ data sets.
- Responses classified as “Object to state/answering” and “Not Specified/elsewhere included” have not been omitted from this analysis as we don’t know their religious beliefs. They will contain a mix of religious and non-religious people.
- There are some anomalies in the Stats NZ category totals not aligning perfectly with the sub-category totals. This does not impact the clear and significant trend, but we have enquired about these differences to ensure we present the most accurate data set possible.
