Data notes

  • This is national data for primary and secondary schools in New Zealand.
  • The data shows averages across all schools for each day from 8th February to 27th May 2022.
  • Not all schools submit attendance reports each week.
  • We are looking into historical data for previous years, but the published data is incomplete. It appears that the average attendance was 91% from 2011-2016, 90% from 2017-2018, 88% in 2020, and 89% in 2021.

Data table with decimals

On-site Off-site On-site + Off-site Absent
Term 1 76.0% 9.1% 85.1% 14.9%
Term 2 83.6% 3.0% 86.6% 13.4%
OVERALL 78.3% 7.3% 85.6% 14.4%

Other notes:

  • From the Ministry of Education:
    • A student is counted as present on-site if they are on-site at any time during a day.
    • Similarly, a student is counted as off-site (learning at home) if they are recorded as learning at home at any time during a day.
    • If a student attends school for part of the day and learns from home the rest of the day, that student is counted in each category: once for attending on-site and once for learning at home. [Note from theFacts: this will inflate attendance levels slightly]
    • Students are not included as learning at home if:
      • they are unwell
      • they are absent due to parent concerns about the risk of contracting COVID-19, or
      • the absence is unexplained
  • Additional notes from the Ministry of Education can be found in the data source pages below.
  • All numbers are provisional and subject to revision.
