The data is for public primary and secondary schools.
Pre-school, private-school, and tertiary education are not included in this data set but have also been heavily impacted by Covid lockdowns.
From Wednesday 17th November 2021:
- Children in Years 0 to 8 will return for part-time learning, e.g. three days per week — unless their parents or carers need to go to work.
- Children in Years 9 and 10 will be able to return for full-time learning.
- Children in Years 11-13 could physically return to school from Tuesday, 26th October 2021 (so their physical school days lost are up to 16 days less for Auckland, Waikato, and parts of Northland. The figures in the graphic show the impact for years 0 to 10 since that is the majority).
Schools have operated online learning during lockdowns.
Teacher-only days may vary between schools.
Attendance rates are not included in this graphic but can be found via the source data if you are interested.
There have been partial lockdowns within some of the education territories above, e.g. not all of the Waikato, Upper Hauraki, Upper Northland.
The children of essential workers have been able to attend physical school during certain periods, e.g. level 3. This equates to ~2-6% attendance.
