KEY INSIGHTS

• There are ~23,000 ‘retail trade’ businesses registered in New Zealand with under $2 million turnover. Many will be online only and we are seeking this full breakdown.
• The Dairy and Business Owners Group chaired by Sunny Kaushal has ~5,000 members according to his quotes in media.
• 8 businesses have received security installations from the Crime Prevention Fund since being launched 6 months ago. A small percentage of all small retailers.
• Another 260 businesses are being processed and at various stages as per the graph above.
• Only businesses that had been victims of at least 1 ram raid since 1 November 2021 have been eligible up until now. This is changing under the announcements yesterday on 28 November 2022 and will now include all victims of aggravated robberies in the last year. More details in the notes below.
• A separate initiative since 2017 has resulted in fog cannons being installed in ~1,000 stores.
• According to Newshub, there have been 517 ram raids in the last year.
• We have not seen data published on the number of aggravated robberies against retail businesses, but will seek this data too.

• We wanted to also show the total number of ‘small retailers’ in the graph but:
  • Couldn’t find Stats NZ ANZSIC breakdowns between online and physical stores. We have asked them.
  • Couldn’t find the Police’s definition of ‘small business’. We have asked them too.
    Once we have this updated data, we will share it.
• Key details of the Crime Prevention Fund when announced 26 May 2022:
  • $6 million from the Proceeds of Crime Fund.
  • For installing security solutions such as bollards, fog cannons, security alarms, and screens.
• There has been a separate initiative set up in 2017 which has supported fog cannon installation in ~1,000 stores.
• Key details of the 28 November updated crime prevention package:
  • Crime Prevention Fund eligibility expanded to include aggravated robberies in the last 12 months, not just ram raid victims.
  • A new fog cannon subsidy scheme where taxpayer funding will cover the first $4,000 cost.
  • ‘Small shops and dairies’ will be eligible. More eligibility details to be announced, including the threshold for a ‘small shop’.
  • $2 million to Auckland Council, $1m to Hamilton Council, and $1m to Bay of Plenty Councils to help with crime prevention programmes.
• All numbers are provisional and subject to revision.
