KEY INSIGHTS

  • Over the last 5 years:
    • 71% (1,296) of all road deaths have been male
    • 29% (523) of all road deaths have been female
  • Intuitively/anecdotally, we know that males are more likely than females to drive a:
    • Motorcycle: 245 male deaths (92%) vs 20 female deaths (8%)
    • Van/utility: 175 male deaths (80%) vs 43 female deaths (20%)
    • Bicycle: 49 male deaths (83%) vs 10 female deaths (17%)
    • Truck: 45 male deaths (96%) vs 2 female deaths (4%)
  • BUT male pedestrian deaths are also higher: 112 male deaths (63%) vs 67 female deaths (37%)
  • Other data also tells us that:
    • Passenger road deaths are similar (191 male and 189 female)
    • Motorcycle pillion (passenger) deaths are 91% female (10 females and 1 male)

KEY QUESTIONS

  1. How do we best reduce road deaths?
  2. Are males overrepresented, underrepresented, or proportionally represented in road deaths compared to driving time?
  3. Are motorcycles overrepresented, underrepresented, or proportionally represented in road deaths compared to driving time?
  4. Are males cycling a lot more than females?
  5. Why are male pedestrian deaths almost twice as high as female pedestrian deaths?

Other notes:

  • These figures are provisional and may include deaths or crashes which are subsequently excluded. Reasons for exclusion include the crash being intentional (suicide, homicide), due to a medical event, or not occurring on a public road (e.g. a driveway).
  • We used 5 years’ worth of daily data as that is the maximum provided online by the Ministry of Transport.
  • We choose pink and blue for female and male genders to increase the speed of audience comprehension since these colours are traditionally associated with each gender.
  • We spent many hours looking for data to answer questions 2-5 above, but were unsuccessful. We have again asked the Ministry of Transport to help locate this data.
  • All numbers are provisional and subject to revision.
